When the trailer is a live-action reboot The Little Mermaid was disconnected last month, and the network was instantly flooded. Short film – now over Million Views and Counts- Showcasing Halle Bailey as Ariel singing a segment of the classic song “Part of Your World”. “I didn’t expect this reaction! I’m absolutely amazed by the way this has all spread,” Bailey told Vogue
during Paris Fashion Week .
The reaction was mostly positive, with several commenters noting that Bailey’s angelic voice “gives a chill down my spine.” But, like many stars playing a very famous role, there was backlash, with racist commentators in particular condemning the prospect of black Ariel. For her part, Bailey chose to focus on the positives — mostly to see how her starring role provided much-needed representation and how it resonated with young black girls. (There are several videos showing the girls’ hilarious reactions to the trailer). “I’ve seen all the babies and I cry every time I watch a reaction video,” Bailey said. “I just went crazy!”
The star will have to keep any specifics of the project under wraps ahead of an expected release next May. But she did live up to the fans’ expectations for this movie. “One can really expect a new, modern take on the film,” Bailey said. “We all knew and loved the story and fell in love with Ariel. This time, it was about what she wanted for herself and her future, not just about being a boy and falling in love.”
Currently, Bailey is busy with other projects, including attending the Roger Vivier shoe launch and the Off-White fashion show at Paris Fashion Week. “I love the energy. Everyone is super nice and I’m always excited when I come to eat here,” she said. “I’m a vegan, so I’ve been eating carbs and pasta!”

Bailey, of course, needed a statement fashion week event for both of them. For Vivier’s show, she wore a teal floral-print denim jacket and pants over a white Off-White bra top. “I’m still wearing [Vivier] shoes that have a crystal ball at the bottom of the [heel],” Bailey said. “[During the demo] there was an entire room dedicated to these shoes, and there was a giant crystal ball in the middle of the room. There was also a room that I was obsessed with; they were playing small Mermaid soundtrack. It gives me the feeling of the ocean!”

At the Off-White show, she switched to a new bold ensemble: a sleeveless turtleneck dress with a cutout at the midsection. “It’s still kind of hot, showing your legs and arms, but it’s still fall and winter — cozy and warm,” she said. As a fan of the late designer Virgil Abloh, she was excited to see new pieces from the brand he founded. “You always know something cool is going to happen at the Off-White show,” Bailey said. “Last time I saw Kendrick [Lamar] perform in the front row.”
As for how Bailey spent his final days in Paris week? Shopping is certainly on the mind. “We lived in all the luxury stores like Chanel and Dior, so I had to go shopping before I left,” Bailey said. After all, she did have a big press conference for The Little Mermaid . We’ll be eagerly awaiting these looks.
