Texas A&M has finally settled on its starting quarterback for the 2022 season, with Haynes King beating out Max Johnson and Conor Wegman. TexAgs.com reports that King won the Aggies’ starting game on Sept. 3 in the season opener against Sam Houston State.
This marks the second year in a row that King will have a chance to lead the Aggies offense. He was drafted as the No. 1 quarterback last year before breaking his leg in Game 2 of the first quarter against Colorado. King beats Kent State 41-10 in one full game in 2021, goes 21-for-33 for 292 yards , 2 touchdowns and 3 interceptions.
Now in the third year of the program, King was once a much touted prospect out of high school. He is the 4-star prospect and No. 5 dual-threat quarterback in the 2020 recruiting class, according to the 247Sports composite rankings.
Head coach Kimber Fisher told reporters after the game that Kim underwent surgery. Zach Calzada started the final 10 games of the season, but he moved to Auburn in January.
Texas A&M adds Johnson and Wegman to offseason quarterback depth chart, Johnson is Louisiana State’s 2021 starter, throwing for 2,815 yards and 27 touchdowns in 12 games. The junior moved to the Aggies in December.
Weigman is a real freshman with a lot of hype. The Texas native is a 5-star prospect and No. 2 quarterback prospect in the 2022 recruiting class, according to the 247Sports composite rankings.
Expect that number to be very high for Texas A&M heading into the season. The team is No. 6 in the AP’s top 25 in the preseason. Alabama (No. 1) and Georgia (No. 3) are the only SEC teams above the Aggies.
Fisher won at least eight games in each of his first four seasons with the Aggies. The team went 8-4 in 2021 and was scheduled to play Wake Forest at the Gator Bowl, but injuries and the COVID-19 outbreak forced them out of the game.
