HBO Max Cancels DC Series 'Pennyworth'

HBO Max is clearing all of its live-action DC Comics scripted original series.

Spotted by Warner Bros. Supporting streamer canceled Pennyworth, A prequel show about Batman’s famous butler. The series wrapped up its third and final season in November 10.

Starring Jack Bannon as Alfred Pennyworth in this show from Gotham creator Bruno Heller Created by (also producer). Pennyworth from Warner Bros. Television for the MGM-backed premium cable network Epix (now called MGM+)developing. To keep programming costs down, the series was sold to HBO Max and paired with other DC series Doom Patrol and Titans on the platform. MGM+ still has the option to air a third season, though that seems unlikely even with the reduced licensing fee.

With the end of Pennyworth and the cancellation of Doom Patrol and Titans, all that remains on HBO Max from the Gunn/Safran DC previous roster is the animated Harley Quinn. This series from Abbott Elementary producers Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker and Warner Bros. TV has been renewed season 4 and is working on a spinoff Noonan’s.

As for what remains of Berlanti’s DC kingdom on the CW , The Flash will end this year; Superman & Lois is in the fourth season and in the bubble; and rookie Gotham Knights bowed in March. Berlanti, by the way, has been working for DC and HBO Max making big-budget Green Lantern series, but in Gunn and Safran Develop new True Detective- style renditions of famous heroes.
