California is a very large state with some of the largest and most advanced health systems in the world. However, due to its size, the Golden State’s health information exchange ecosystem is often fragmented and siloed, with many regional HIEs serving their nearby providers.
In July 2021, the State of California. Gavin Newsom signed Bill AB 133 into law. It requires healthcare organizations across the state to connect their data-sharing capabilities. The legislation calls on healthcare stakeholders to identify possible looks and policies, but requires real-time exchange of treatment, payment and healthcare operations information starting in 2024.
