Hogwarts Legacy System requirements mark a step towards the next generation

The big picture: Hogwarts Legacy is one of the most anticipated games of early 2023. While it will support previous-gen consoles and the Nintendo Switch, its PC system requirements look closer to those of current-gen games. Even at 1080p, the still-popular GTX 1060 won’t cut it anymore.

This week, the PC system requirements for Hogwarts Legends appeared on the game’s Steam page. Unlike some recent high-profile titles that offer multiple layers of requirements for resolutions like 1440p and 4K, Hogwarts Legacy has so far only listed “minimum” and “recommended” specs for 1080p games. However, they are steep compared to other recent high-profile games at this resolution.

Avalanche Software and Warner Bros. Studio’s open-world fantasy prequel to the Harry Potter series requires at least a GTX 1070 or RX Vega 56 to run at 1080p and 60fps playback. Steam recommends playing on the 1080 Ti at the same resolution and frame rate, with graphics set to high.

These specs are close to Ubisoft’s upcoming Skull & Bones, which will only be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox series consoles, and PC, and people are very excited about Hogwarts in The performance on PS4, Xbox One, and especially Nintendo Switch has been questioned. So far, there’s nothing to suggest that the Switch version will be cloud-based like Assassin’s Creed Odyssey or Resident Evil VII, which are far less demanding on PC systems.

Also, Hogwarts Legacy’s specs don’t work at native 1080p. The minimum requirement is “Premium Performance Setting”, and the recommended specification includes “Premium Quality Setting”. The wording suggests that the game uses an image upscaling algorithm like AMD’s FSR (Nvidia’s DLSS doesn’t work on any of the listed GPUs), or possibly a custom solution from Avalanche. Based on Nvidia and AMD algorithms, “Performance” may use an internal resolution of 540p, while “Quality” can scale from 720p.

Hogwarts Legacy also requires 85GB of storage, preferably on an SSD. The rest of the system requirements are as follows:

Minimum (1080p 60fps low settings, high performance settings):

Processor: Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600

  • Memory: 8 GB RAM
  • Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 or AMD RX Vega 56
  • Recommended (1080p 60fps, high settings, high quality settings):

    • Processor: Intel Core i7-8700 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600
    • Memory: 16 GB RAM
    • Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 1080 Ti or AMD RX 5700 XT
    • Hogwarts Legacy launches February 10, 2023 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series consoles, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Although Harry Potter author JK Rowling was not directly involved with the game, Warner Bros. can’t (or won’t) say whether she’ll receive any royalties from its sales. For those who have questioned Rowling’s recent comments about transgender people, the uncertainty may be worrying.
