But part of it is also a delicate balance of dramatizing the private lives of the British royal family while refusing to distance themselves from real-life events. Whether we like to admit it or not, we have an insatiable interest in literal court intrigue.
Recently, a photo of Elizabeth Debicki playing Princess Diana sent the internet into a tailspin over their uncanny resemblance. That’s the norm for the class: Over its multiple seasons, the creators of The Crown have been careful about casting to capture the complex nature of their royal characters. Claire Foy, for example, has been praised for her reserved, composed portrayal of the adult Queen Elizabeth. Meanwhile, Josh O’Connor has mastered Prince Charles’ aristocracy in seasons three and four.
