How the Princess of Wales and Duchess of Sussex's fashion pays tribute to the Queen

When the Princess of Wales and the Duchess of Sussex head Went to Westminster Abbey for Queen Elizabeth’s funeral in the morning of September , they are low Head down, face dignified, dressed in all black.

The princess dress is an A-line Alexander McQueen dress with a wide veiled headdress. The Duchess, meanwhile, opted for a Stella McCartney cape gown and a Dior hat by Stephen Jones, complete with black gloves.

The choice of these brands is very deliberate. Both McQueen and McCartney are some of the most respected British fashion houses today, while Jones is one of the most famous millinery makers in the country. Queen Elizabeth is a champion of the country’s fashion scene, even presenting the Queen Elizabeth II Design Award to emerging talent in the industry. Plus, each wore their respective designers at the wedding, a subtle aesthetic tribute to the moment they became members of the former monarch’s family.

The two ladies also wore jewels given to them by the late monarch: the Princess wore a four-strand pearl and diamond necklace, and the Duchess wore delicate pearl and diamond earrings. (The choice of accessories follows a centuries-old tradition of royal mourning: Queen Victoria wore pearls to mark the death of her husband, Prince Albert, and nobles have continued to follow suit since then.)
