“For really hydrated skin, we also have to look at the ingredients we use that can cause dehydration (or transepidermal water loss). You can use all the moisturizers in the world, but if you overuse alpha hydroxy acids (AHA) and other ingredients, you’ll always find yourself suffering from the effects of dehydration,” says Marshall. While actives like acid and retinol are great ingredients that can do wonders for the skin, Marshall says most consumers don’t know how to use them properly. “Active ingredients are like a piece of cake — wonderful for occasional use, but if used daily, they can wreak havoc on your skin’s health. It’s about finding the balance between actives, antioxidants, and protectants.”

She’s a big fan of incorporating polyhydroxy acids (or PHAs) for those who want a foolproof way to get the benefits of exfoliation without flaking skin A skincare routine, like everything AHA does—from exfoliation to smoothing—is more sustainable in the long run.
