In a brief press release, Huawei and Oppo announced their new cross-licensing agreement. The patents cover technologies such as 5G, Wi-Fi, and audio/video codecs.
Since the announcement does not go into detail, one would assume that Huawei provides the connectivity technology and that Oppo will provide Huawei with patents related to audio and video. As some of you know, Oppo has a long history of high-quality audio and video consumer electronics.
We tend to agree. With Huawei backed into a corner by U.S. sanctions, a cross-licensing deal with Oppo could ensure that some of the 5G technology ends up being utilized by a company that sells products outside of China. Only time will reveal the true scope of this collaboration.
