Icelandic thriller “Operation Napoleon” tops Berlin market

Operation Napoleon, a conspiracy thriller set in Iceland, produced by Óskar Þór Axelsson (Black’s Game)

At the European Film Market (EFM) in Berlin later this month, international sales lead the market.

Sales agency Beta Cinema announced Thursday that the film has been selected by France’s Mediawan, Spain’s Twelve Oaks, Poland’s Hagi Film and Japan’s Tohokushinsha. Smaller sales included the territories of the former Yugoslavia (MegaCom) and Taiwan (AV-Jet).

Based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Icelandic crime writer Arnaldur Indriðason, Operation Napoleon is a high-concept conspiracy thriller centered on an old German WWII plane carrying dangerous secrets, found as it emerges from the melting glaciers of Iceland, and returns there 1945.

Icelandic newcomer Vivian Ólafsdóttir (It Hatched) stars in the English adaptation with an international cast including Game of Thrones‘ 1945Ian Glenn, Riviera and Cheaters actor Jack Fox and German star Wotan Wilke Möhring (Valkyrie, Pandorum).

The $7 million film was produced by Iceland’s Sagafilm and Germany’s Splendid Film Produced and financed outside of Europe. Sam Films pre-ordered the film for Iceland, which opens on February 3. Splendid and publisher 24 Bilder will be released in Germany on March 9th. The German public broadcaster ZDF owns the local free-to-air television rights.

Beta, responsible for worldwide sales, will be screening the film for international buyers at EFM in Berlin. Beta holds a 24% stake in Sagafilm through its Scandinavian arm, Beta Nordic Studios.
