Idris Elba is addressing the social media debate surrounding Luther: Fallen Sun The star recently said he no longer described himself as a black actor because he found himself “locked in a box.”
The actor took to Twitter on Saturday to clarify his recent comments to Esquire magazine Viral comments. In his tweet, Elba emphasized that he does identify himself as black, but he doesn’t want to be “defined” when it comes to “racism” about him acting career.
“No one on earth can question whether I consider myself black,” Elba wrote. “‘Actor’ is a profession, like ‘architect’, regardless of race. However, if you use your race to define your job, it’s your Perogative. Ah lie?
The London-born actor spoke at length about racism in relation to Hollywood in an interview with Esquire) Wednesday Published online. In the piece, he admits he considers himself “a part of the black community,” but also says he feels people focus more on their similarities than their differences.
