India's Google Play gets UPI Autopay option for subscription-based payments

Google has launched UPI auto payment option for Google Play users in India. This option will be available for all future subscription-based payments.

UPI Auto Payment feature is part of UPI 2.0 feature set by National Payments Corporation of India, enabling payment using popular UPI payment recurring payment system and using any supported UPI application. Users must authorize payment for the first month of their new subscription, subsequent payments will be automatically debited.

Saurabh Agarwal, Head of Retail and Payment Activation, Google Play – India, Vietnam, Australia and New Zealand said: “We are always looking to add popular and effective Payment methods to ensure that people can conveniently pay for apps and in-app content.By introducing UPI Autopay on the platform, we aim to extend the convenience of UPI to subscription-based purchases, helping more people get useful and delightful service, while enabling local developers to grow their subscription-based businesses on Google Play.”

New UPI Autopay option follows RBI’s new initiative on credit card recurring payments The fire followed the guidelines, which now require banks to notify users of upcoming recurring payments two days in advance.

This also resulted in stored credit card information being deleted from merchants on October 1st, if the user is not in Payment by September 11. This means that many users who haven’t reset their payment methods for services like Google Play now have the option to use UPI autopay instead of credit card.
