James Gunn is defending his Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
villain High Evolutionary, played by Chukwudi Iwuji.
On Monday, the new co-heads of DC Studios posted a photo of the Iwuji character On the set of his upcoming Marvel movie and captioned, “Can’t wait for you guys to meet this guy.”
An Instagram user left a lengthy comment on Gunn’s photo, saying: “Damn…they turned another white guy into a black man. Why can’t they make him How about being white, or I don’t know… choose a different minority? Asian or gasp! Latino? (How many Latinos and Asians in the MCU? 5 total??) Or make him one of the Indians Kind of… because they won’t and won’t, it “woke up” them.”
The user continued, “Next time, the main characters (hero/villain ) will be transgender or gay or non-binary (in the comics they are not). Sad and pathetic. They are picked based on race and what is PC, not based on show and established stuff.”
Gunn shot back, “I chose best actor, period, and best person for this role. I don’t care what race @chukwudi_iwuji is, so stop your race on why he was chosen (And, by the way, he plays someone who is almost always purple.)”
Gunn has worked with Iwuji before Peacemaker , the HBO Max series spun off from Suicide Squad .
