Jio launches campaign to replace 250 million 2G phones in India

Reliance Jio, one of India’s major telecom companies, is steadily expanding its 5G network. However, according to a press release, it states that more than 250 million people are “trapped in the 2G era” and that the operator plans to bring them to the internet.

Jio Bharat plans will provide users with INR500 phones with 4G connectivity and extremely affordable plans compared to other operators. The beta will start on Friday, July 7th and include 1 million units sold in 6,250 regions in India.

There is no information or specifications of any device other than the fact that these phones will be branded under the Jio Bharat platform. The official press release does say that they will support UPI payments from JioPay, will have a camera on the back, and will have tons of entertainment options – Jio Cinema offers movies, videos and sports highlights; JioSaavn has more than 23 Millions of songs in multiple languages; and FM radio.
