Shortly after anniversary,” Mulaney said on Doug Herzog and Jen Chaney’s Basic . podcast. “I had a sitcom on Fox. They aired all the 40 [episodes], but they got canceled. It It didn’t turn out great, but at least the critics were raving about it. So, it was a fun time.”

“I’m very honored that you all asked me about this,” Mulaney said. “I got the feeling they were going to be big shoes to fill. I guess I was too scared to put myself out there the moment after Fox ran. I felt all eyes were on whoever was after Mr. Stewart.”
He continued, “It wasn’t the right thing to do at the time, but I remember saying to Kent, ‘I hope it’s five years from now.’ And he said, ‘Yes ,but it is not the truth. ’ I mean, I just remember Kent’s tone being good, ‘I hear you. I’m here to hear whatever you have to say, but now is the time, we’re asking you about this, we can’t Talk hypothetically for so long at this dinner, John.’”
