Actors are not the actual characters they play in film and television.
John Oliver delivered this message on Sunday’s show Last week tonight in response to Fox News pundits’ comments.
He pointed out at the start of the latest episode of HBO’s late-night show that former President Donald Trump and U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg both visited East Palestine in Ohio after a freight train derailed and toxic spills.
However, Oliver pointed out, that wasn’t enough for some of Fox News’ celebrities. He showed a clip of Fox News hosts Rachel Campos-Duffy and Jesse Watters discussing visiting and not visiting Ohio amid the disaster Notables of the town.
“Think about environmental activists and corporate America — they’re not there,” Campos-Duffy said. “I mean, it’s a ‘ Erin Brockovich‘ moment for activists. There’s a blockbuster Oscar-winning movie that does that Written.”
) Campos-Duffy replied: “She is—but where is Julia Roberts?”
A confused and angry Oliver responds: “What? What are you talking about? You know Julia Roberts is an actress, right? She’s putting on a show. She’s not actually Erin Brockovich.”
He continued, citing some of her most important films: “Also, I can’t believe I’m the one who has to break this to you. She didn’t actually ruin her best friend’s Wedding [My Best Friend’s Wedding], she is not a sex worker [Pretty woman], she did not die in a small town in Louisiana 1989 [Steel Magnolias]. What the fuck is wrong with you?”
