Judge, Bates talks about free agency, tough matchups and…Taylor Swift

Dodgers superstar Mookie Betts happy Aaron Judge decided to re-sign with the Yankees last offseason rather than join his hometown Giants in free agency.

A trade with the Giants would put Judge in the NL West, which would mean regular matchups with Betts’ Dodgers. With Judge back in New York, meetings with Bates are far less frequent. The two will face off in a rare matchup this weekend when the Dodgers host the Yankees in a three-game series at Dodger Stadium.

Ahead of Friday’s series opener, Judge joined Betts on Bleacher Report’s new show “On Base.” Judge touched on a variety of topics in a wide-ranging conversation, including his free agency experience (a ” A lot of pressure” process), his least favorite pitcher to face (Rays’ Taylor Glasnow), and yes, even his favorite Taylor Swift song (“Bad Blood”).

For a short time in December, it looked like Judge might actually be leaving the Yankees to sign with the Giants, with a report emerging during the winter meeting that the slugger was close to a deal with San Francisco.

“My heart sank a little when I heard you were going to the Giants,” Betts said.
“You don’t want to see me?” the judge interrupted.

“I want to see you, but I don’t want to see you in [Giants’] right field,” Betts said. [I was thinking], Giants, this is already a competition and now they’re going to be so good, what are you going to add to that team, so I was like, ‘Oh my gosh. ‘”
