There’s not a lot that celebrities can do to genuinely endear themselves to me (apart from Dolly Parton donating $1 million to COVID vaccine research or Fiona Apple court-watching), but one variety of famous-person behavior that I’ll always find delightful is the ever-popular foray out for fast food.
Bennifer 2.0 are arguably the pioneers of this trend, given Ben Affleck’s undying love for Dunkin’ and J. Lo’s seeming acceptance of this extremely Bostonian quirk of her husband’s, but they’re hardly the only ones: Julia Roberts famously hit up an In-N-Out after the 2019 Golden Globes (respect) and Mindy Kaling is on the record about her love of McDonald’s, writing in her 2015 memoir: “If you follow me on any kind of social media you will see that I’m constantly eating McDonald’s, and not in a campy, skinny-actress way where I go when I’m on my period and ‘being bad!’”
The latest high-wattage stars to grace the humble doors of a fast-food establishment, of course, are none other than Justin and Hailey Bieber, who stepped out (to use Daily Mail’s parlance) in two extremely different outfits—Crocs for him, Vivienne Westwood for her—to a Krispy Kreme in New York. No, they weren’t there purely for donuts; Hailey was on hand to promote Rhode’s limited-edition peptide lip treatment in strawberry glaze (say that five times fast), and I guess Justin was just there to be a supportive husband? But I’m still counting this one as a win for fast-food culture. Next thing you know, they’ll be hopping over to Justin’s native Canada and chowing down on Timbits and iced capps at Tim Hortons!
