Nintendo Directs is one of the very short lists that can get me up early in the morning and I will Happy to drink some caffeine and see what’s new at Splatoon. Although I’ll admit, the main thing I’ve kept from the Splatoon 3 show this week is the new group Deep Cut. Obviously I’m not the only one either. Now that we’re all friends here, let’s discuss who we like best. I’m a big man fan myself, but I wouldn’t judge anyone who prefers Fry or Shiver.
In other news, it feels like we’ve had a lot of games delayed in recent weeks: Gollum, Arc Raiders, Avatar: Pandora’s Frontier, Marvel’s Midnight Sun, Now the legacy of Hogwarts. I’m guessing we’ll reach that point in the year when the developers are sure they won’t be in the holiday season release window, hence the flood of game delay announcements. Arguably, the calendar for 2023 looks richer than it did a few months ago. As long as I get Witcher 3 and Slime Rancher 2, I can live with being deprived of other games.
Speaking of the recently delayed game, Forspoken gave itself a new trailer this week. I won’t be the first to tell you this sucks – the whole internet rummaged this thing over coal until it got brittle. I hope it doesn’t represent the whole game. But if that’s the case, I think the developers have a distorted notion of what a “relevant” protagonist is. I know they’re looking for a modern character out of the water in a fantasy world, but she certainly didn’t put me in “so let me get straight to the point…”. Interestingly, this actually reminds me of the main character of Scalebound. Remember him? Gulping into a fantasy world with your dragon companion wearing your Beats headphones? I have no opinion; I am still disappointed that I will never be able to play that game.
As for me, I’m a little weird about a new Lonely in the Dark game being announced recently – because just a few days ago I was in a conversation about horror games mentioned this series. You know how it feels when you think about something after you haven’t thought about it for years, and suddenly you see that thing everywhere? Just like that. I’m still catching up with my backlog of old games. I’ve been trying to make progress in Xenoblade Chronicles 3, but it’s been a long time since I’ve played a long-form RPG, and it’s hard Sometimes it takes focus. I have some thoughts on the two-point campus that I will write down early next week. As long as I can get rid of some old games of the year before Saints Row comes out – that’s what I really want to do.
