Mariners right-hand starter George Kirby and Warriors outfielder Michael Harris II were named Rookies of the Month for August.
Kirby had a 2.15 ERA in five starts last month and 1.32 FIP went 4-0. His start on Aug. 24 was the only one he didn’t win, but he hit several personal bests that day (seven innings, nine kings) and set an AL/NL record with a 24-game start.
The 24-year-old right wing had 34 strikeouts in August, Only 3 walks for 29 1/3 innings. He is the second sailor to receive the honor in 2022, having previously won the honor twice. Kirby is the first Mariners pitcher to be named Rookie of the Month since Michael Pineda in 2011.
Harris has played like a star since being drafted in late May , but he took his game to another level in August as he recorded 95 at-bats on .337/.400/.590 slashes with 16 additional base hits. He leads rookies in hits (32) and is tied for sixth among all eligible hitters (22).
Harris signed an eight-year contract on August 16 and went to work directly The deal looks good. From that day on, he had at least one hit in 12 of his next 13 games until the end of the month. That span features a four-game night against the Cardinals on Aug. 28. Harris has now been recognized as Rookie of the Month twice in his first three months in the majors.
