In a Netflix-worthy moment, all three major US theater chains have agreed to air the upcoming tentpole Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery A week after Thanksgiving and a month before the much-anticipated movie hits theaters.
Rain Johnson’s highly anticipated sequel will be in theaters around 600 Thanksgiving. In addition to AMC Theatres, Cinemark Theatres and Regal Cinemas, the film will be screened at other select locations in the US and overseas.
Theatrical release of the film is scheduled for November 23-29, according to people familiar with the matter, as part of a campaign to further eventualize the film.
“We’re excited to offer fans an exclusive preview of Rian’s incredible film,” Netflix film boss Scott Stuber said in a statement. “Given the excitement surrounding the premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, we hope fans will enjoy this special theatrical event to celebrate the film’s December world premiere on Netflix.”
While Cinemark has aired some Netflix titles during the pandemic, most major theater chains have historically been reluctant to pre-order a title that is coming out so quickly at home. Another major issue is marketing. While Hollywood studios are used to spending tens of millions of dollars on theatrical events, Netflix is not.
Sources have been telling THR for months that marketing has become a stumbling block in talks with streaming as theatrical window (in They themselves have collapsed across the industry after the COVID- 19 crisis).
Knives Out: Transactions of Glass Onion Seems like a win-win for everyone involved, because movie theaters need the product, and it’s only a special preview for a week.
Knives Out 2 Daniel Craig reprises his role as Detective Benoit Blanc. This time, he joins stars Edward Norton, Janelle Monnaie, Katherine Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madeline Klein, Kate Hudson and Join Dave Bautista. Tickets will go on sale in October 10.
International markets where the film will be released in theaters include Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Spain, Israel, Australia and New Zealand.
