Lakers news: NBA columnist explains why Los Angeles needs to re-sign Carmelo Anthony

The Lakers have struggled all season, but one bright spot can be seen in the team’s secondary role that Carmelo Anthony has played throughout his career. Anthony has embraced his role off the bench and made key 3-pointers when needed, but the future Hall of Fame forward is nearing the end of his career.

Anthony and LeBron James are in the same draft class, and James is still at an elite level. Even with that in mind, the Lakers had no problem bringing Anthony back to the bench last season.

NBA Insider Zach Buckley noticed Anthony’s ability and thought the Lakers should pursue him in free agency (quoted from Bleacher Report).

“The Lakers have improved their youth and athleticism on the perimeter this offseason, but they could add more shots from the field …or rather, keep the shooting percentage they already have. Carmelo Anthony to the 38-year-old of players have shown his ability (at least on offense). “
