Lawmakers say EU should file WTO complaint over U.S. inflation-cutting bill

(Reuters) – The European Union should lodge a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) in the coming months over the U.S. green energy subsidy package, the head of the European Parliament’s trade committee reportedly said

The U.S. and EU have so far tried to take a conciliatory approach to the bill, saying last week they would seek to address EU concerns about the package, known as the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act.

EU member states are concerned that the $1 billion bill, which offers generous tax breaks to US companies, could disadvantage European companies, from automakers to green technology makers.

Officials from both sides will resolve the issue at a meeting next week, but Bernd Lange, head of the European Parliament’s trade committee, said he no longer expected a negotiated solution, Because small changes can still be negotiated.

“I don’t think there will be much change in substance because the law has already been passed,” Funke Media Group quoted Lange as saying, adding that a complaint to the WTO would send a message that the bill was not Comply with the organization’s rules.
