LSU's Brian Kelly in first half: 'We couldn't have played worse'

Brian Kelly was explicitly acknowledged in his first game as LSU football coach

The first half didn’t go well for LSU under Brian Kelly.

The offense ended with just 119 yards total, and Kayzon Boot didn’t have a catch before halftime. LSU trailed Florida State 7-3.

At halftime, Kelly offered his estimates of things in a conversation with ESPN reporter Katie George.

Brian Kelly speaks candidly about LSU problems

“I don’t think we can play any worse than this, ‘ Kelly admitted.

“I mean, it’s my first game, maybe we can. Just poor execution. Our guys understand that – you can’t fumble football in a punt like we do , although it was a good stop.

“Obviously, we made some mistakes on the offensive end and we stopped the offense. Couldn’t get off the field in the third behind.

“These guys are just going to be free, to play, to execute the way they are playing. Now we have to overcome a little bit of adversity in the second half and grow as a football team.”

Injuries hit LSU’s defense

If LSU’s offense wasn’t good enough to make a bad impression on fans , then the injury bug also seriously bit the Tigers’ defense.

Star defensive lineman Maason Smith celebrates in the first half with a knee injury and needs the attention of the coaches in the LSU locker room.

He played with the team at half-time, but in casual clothes, walking on crutches, wearing a brace on his left knee, visibly emotional.
