
Former UFC middleweight champion Luke Rockhold explains why he smeared blood on Paul Costa at UFC 278.
Last Saturday night in Salt Lake City, the 37-year-old was back on the court. The co-main event with the Brazilian is Rockhold’s first in more than three years. Despite the break, the former champion didn’t miss a beat.
Two middleweights put on a show in Utah. Costa did most of the better work, bloody Rockhold throughout the game. However, the former middleweight champion hit his foe a few times with some of his own heavy shots. In the final seconds three, the middleweight takes the fight to the mat. The Brazilian regained his surrender ace, but not for long. Rockhold turned into Costa and ended with a full-on defense. There, the 37-year-old smeared his own blood on the enemy below him. Luke Rockhold lost the fight by unanimous decision, but was praised for his performance. In his post-fight interview, the former UFC middleweight champion withdrew from active duty.
Now, in MMA Hour discussed his bout with Paulo Costa with California native Ariel Helwani. There, the 37-year-old discussed the final seconds of the game as he smeared blood on his opponents. Lockhold said the moment was just the last sign of a revolt against his opponent.
“It just gets you hooked,” Luke Rockhold said on the MMA Hour. “It’s like, what a fucking bitch, we’re just talking back and forth. It’s like someone is racing against the clock and someone is going to kill, there’s a difference. I’m there to kill or get killed, and he’s just there to try and get through. You know, if there’s more time, I’ll just rush over, and it’s probably over by the mount position.”
