Margot Robbie’s Barbie Era Isn’t Over Yet

Just when we all thought her Barbie Era was behind her, Margot Robbie surprised us all at the 2023 Gotham Awards in yet another doll-like look.

The actor, who was being honored for Barbie alongside writer-director Greta Gerwig, mimicked “Black Magic” Barbie, a doll produced between 1964 and 1965, and allegedly inspired by Barbie creator Ruth Handler’s own favorite outfit. Robbie’s stylist Andrew Mukamal once again delivered a fabulous ode to Barbie. Robbie’s custom Prada look featured a black strapless satin dress that fell below the knee, paired with a sheer black cape with black ribbon detailing, knotted at the nape of her neck in a large bow.

Like “Black Magic” Barbie, the actor and producer accessorized with peep-toe pumps—though we doubt the doll’s are Manolo Blahnik—black leather gloves, and a metallic gold baguette bag. And never one to miss a single detail, Mukamal put Robbie in a pair of large pearl earrings from Assael, something reminiscent of the earrings children pop into the pre-drilled holes in their dolls’ earlobes.

This isn’t the first time that Mukamal has whipped up a method dressing look for Robbie. For the Barbie film’s Seoul premiere, she wore a look inspired by the 1985 “Day to Night” Barbie, an outfit change with a pink skirt suit (complete with a bejeweled brick of a cell phone) and a sparkly bustier with a voluminous, hot pink skirt from Versace. And for the film’s London premiere, she replicated “Enchanted Evening” Barbie in Vivienne Westwood couture, wearing a floor length baby pink evening dress complete with a dramatic train and white fur stole.

While we aren’t sure what else is in store for Margot Robbie and Andrew Mukamal, the power duo has a long awards season ahead.
