Lesscio Familiare’s story reads like a fairy tale, and it’s hard not to think about its founders – Riccardo Scaburri, Alice Curti , Alberto Petillo and their stylist Riccardo Terzio are like a group of happy elves. Their story dates back to the time of the pandemic two years ago, when three graduates of NABA (Nuova Accademia di Bella Arte) started making clothes “for pleasure and boredom,” Scaburri said by phone. “We made these striking gowns at home with IKEA bows and ruffle curtains; then we put on the dresses, using only our old shirts, then the sweaters, cut it all out, and pieced it together …in the beginning, it was very intimate and done at home. It was also a reference to [Italian novelist] Natalia Ginzberg’s Lessico Famigliare1920 ( is well known 1950).”

Ginzberg’s book is fictional, part biographical, from 80 to 80’s account of everyday life in Italy, some of which are particularly relevant to the brand’s processes. Their one-size-fits-all and unisex apparel are one-off, using materials sourced from their immediate family and friends’ family. These include clothing, but also home textiles. They presented their bridal-themed collection to Who Is On Next. For example, the jury (of which I was a member) used a lot of dowry linen, and the striking red floral dress from the latest collection was originally a tablecloth.

As restrictions eased, the trio started filming their w dealing with their neighbours, One of them was very photogenic model Benedetta Barzini. This sparked some discussion about the brand. “Suddenly, people around us, mainly here in Milan, actually noticed us, and they were very interested in this project, mainly because of the title: Why Lessico Familiare? What does it mean?” Ska Brie said. This is an important question because the brand’s vocabulary (including bows, trompe l’oeil, filling and deconstruction) is not only visual but also verbal. “Behind the picture, there is a world of words, also in the concept; [this] is not only something we see, we need to share words,” says Scaburri.

Because each piece is one-off, every shape in the Cocktail collection can be Truly described as a “statement” piece. The team’s approach is to work together on each individual project, navigating a sea of collective reference. “If you look at the individual pieces, they’re all very isolated and different in a way,” Scaburri points out, “but when you look at the whole, it makes sense. It’s drama, it’s theatrical, But also fun.”

Cocktail theme stems from Terzo’s suggestion to create more ” Nighttime” collection, but it also references the way Lessico Familiare makes clothes: by mixing a little of this and then shaking or stirring it into something “rough and innocent” but easy to pour. This cocktail pays homage to the charming etiquette of 50 and 1950 attire, plus 80 drama soup. Look closely and you might spot subtle references to Cristóbal Balenciaga’s volumes and cocoons or Christian Lacroix’s poufs. Some of the actors struck high fashion poses.

Fashion references aside, Cocktail combines existing materials through Frankenstein, bringing Here comes a cast of lifelike characters. A padded mini shirtdress looks Shakespeare with leggings. Pierrot shows up in a bow tie comparable to Rembrandt. A photo of Catherine Deneuve inspired a leopard-print coat with a giant white bow on the back, while the polka-dot bow gave it a touch of Disney, Scaburri said. Some pieces use vintage dresses, others are made from upcycled tracksuits. It’s all magic made from everyday objects. Lessico Familiare has also collaborated with major European vintage dealers to produce a series of “uniforms” using white shirts.

A white shirt is equivalent to a white paper. What the next chapter of Lessico Familiare will be is still up in the air. It’s not so much because they eschew the typical business model, but because “we don’t know anything about the future. We’re just continuing to do what we love in a very organic and natural way, and our goal is to continue Work that way.” This kind of freedom is rare in fashion, and it’s why they continue to follow the brand’s breadcrumb path as they continue to pursue their dreams.
