MIPCOM: Disney+ about couple with Down syndrome 'Ralph and Katie', autism drama 'One Word'

Disney+ fell in love with Ralph and Katie .

A deal announced on the eve of International TV Market MIPCOM , Disney+ has acquired the rights to BBC One’s dramatic comedy about a newlywed couple with Down syndrome in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) (excluding the UK).

Six half-hour series based on BBC hit autism drama The A Word, UK premiere October The 5th received rave reviews. Leon Harrop and Sarah Gordy play eponymous newlyweds Ralph and Katie, characters originally created for The A Word. The A Word is the UK adaptation of Yellow Peppers, a seminal hit written and composed by Keren Margalit for Keshet Broadcasting Israeli family drama.

Co-produced by ITV Studios and Keshet UK Ralph & Katie co-produced with Tiger Aspect for BBC One. The A Word is produced for BBC One’s Fifty Fathoms/Tiger Aspect and Keshet UK.

Disney’s deal with sales group Keshet International also includes multiple rights to all three seasons of The A Word . The A Word has been launched on Disney+ in Northern Europe and Belgium. The show will roll out in batches in November in Portugal, Italy, Spain and France, and next year in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Ralph and Katie will debut early on Disney+ in EMEA 2023.
