UFC 278 had a fight.
The women’s flyweight bout between Miranda Maverick and Shanna Young didn’t even pass the weigh-in Friday due to Young’s health complications.
“Welp… the battle is over,” Maverick said on Instagram. “Shana Young is hospitalized (assuming weight loss) and I hope she recovers quickly. We are well prepared for this camp and have made great progress. I have gained weight (floating one in the morning) lbs). I hope to see some great games on Saturday and get back in the cage as soon as possible. Thank you for your support and for the people who invested in my team and stood up for this fight.”
MMA Fighting later confirmed that Young had had issues with her losing weight that resulted in her being hospitalized.
The Mavericks (10-4) overcame Sabina Mazo in March, ending a lose-lose kid. The fight will be her last in her current UFC deal. Young (8-4) also broke a two-game losing streak by stopping Gina Mazany in April.
UFC 278 headlined champion Kamaru Usman and challenger Leon Edwards. With Young vs. Maverick canceled, the prelims start time is now 6:30pm ET/3:30pm PT with AJ Fletcher vs. Ange Loosa heading into the televised preliminaries.
