Mark your calendars. The race to crown the next World Series champion begins Friday, October 7, when the 2022 MLB playoffs begin.
According to Major League Baseball’s announcement of the playoff schedule on Monday, this first Playoff day of action will include four games from the American League and National League Wild Card Series presented by Hankook Tire on ESPN, ABC and ESPN2 and the ESPN app. (ESPN Radio will also provide live national coverage of all 2022 MLB playoff games.) The 2022 World Series Presented by Capital One is scheduled to open three weeks later on Friday, October 28, airing on FOX, which hosts coverage of the Fall Classic for the 25th time.
This year’s playoffs will feature a new format, expanding the pool of teams from 10 to 12 and replacing the two single-elimination Wild Card games with four best-of-three Wild Card series, which will be followed by the best-of-five division series.
The openings of the four series of divisions AL and NL are planned for on Tuesday, October 11, with 5 potential matches scheduled for October 16 (NLDS) and October 17 (ALDS). FOX or FS1 will handle coverage for NLDS, while TBS will cover ALDS.
The National League Championship Series presented by loanDepot is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, October 18 and will be televised by FOX or FS1. The American League Championship Series presented by loanDepot kicks off Wednesday, October 19 on TBS. If necessary, NLCS Game 7 is scheduled for Tuesday, October 25, while ALCS Game 7 is scheduled for Wednesday, October 26.
NLCS and ALCS winners will meet in the 2022 World Series, with the Fall Classic set to run through Saturday, November 5 , if seven matches are needed .
