If Montas can’t start as scheduled, Boone said Domingo German could return to the rotation. The German has been used as an opener and a long-term substitute since the last multi-inning start on September 7. Luis Severino also plans to return from minor league rehab assignments to start Wednesday’s game against the Buccaneers.

The bomber’s trade deadline campaign has so far largely failed. Aside from Montas’ instability, outfielder Andrew Beningtendi’s return date is unknown due to a hand injury, right-hander Scott Everos has been on the injured list, and outfielder Harrison Budd is on the injured list. Plantar fasciitis has yet to make its debut.
