Motorola finally unveils an updated Razr flip, but getting one can be a challenge

BOTTOM LINE: Motorola is expected to announce an updated version of its foldable Razr smartphone at last week’s event. However, at the 11th hour, Motorola canceled the event without any explanation. Now, just over a week later, the smartphone maker has finally unveiled its iconic flip phone, and some will no doubt be disappointed by its lack of availability.

Let’s get the bad news out of the way. At least for now, Motorola is only launching the Razr 2022 in China. With any luck, they’ll reconsider and bring it to more markets, but we’ll have to wait and see how it turns out.

The New The Razr features a 6.7-inch foldable P-OLED FHD+ panel with a 144Hz refresh rate, HDR10+ support, and a 2.7-inch P-OLED overlay display that can be used as a viewfinder for the rear camera or to check messages and alerts. The external screen has dual cameras – a 13-megapixel ultra-wide camera and a 50-megapixel OIS shooter. The punch-hole camera on the main display relies on a 32-megapixel sensor.

As we all know, it can be paired with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC up to 12GB of RAM and 512GB of UFS 3.1 storage. It will run Android 12 with Motorola UI and pack a 3,500mAh battery with support for a 33W fast charger. Other conveniences include dual SIM support, 5G, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC and a USB-C port.

Motorola Razr 2022 will be launched in China on August 15th. Pricing starts at 5,999 yuan (about $890) for the model with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage, while the 12GB/512GB model can be expanded to 7,299 yuan (about $1,082).

If you’re in the market for a foldable clamshell and don’t want to wait to see if Motorola brings the Razr 2022 to other markets, there are a few other options to consider. Samsung’s new Galaxy Z Flip 4, announced yesterday, will go on sale on August 26, starting at $999. The 2020 Razr 5G is still available for retail, but its mid-range hardware and poor camera make it a bit difficult to recommend at this point.
