Neil Gaiman's Sandman Comics is a masterpiece. Here's how to read them.

After years of development, the long-awaited adaptation of Neil Gaiman Sandman is finally on the screen. The Netflix series stars Tom Sturridge as Dream aka Morpheus aka Sandman, the ruler of dreams and the master of dreams. The series follows a hybrid between a mad scientist and a little magician named Burgess (Charles Dance), who has spent decades capturing dreams and leaving his kingdom in ruins.

As he tries to regain his power and kingdom, Dream must contend with those who enjoy his absence, including mad John Dee (David Thewlis, Ha Prisoner of Lipot and Azkaban) and Corinthian (Boyd Holbrook, Logan), a nightmare escaped to our world. Along the way, Dream will get his sister Reaper (Kirby Howell-Baptiste, kills Eve ), Lady Johanna Constantine (Jenna Coleman, ) Doctor Who ), Matthew the Raven (Patton Oswalt, King of Queens) and Mervyn Pumpkin Head (voiced by the legendary Mark Hamill).

The Sandman helped revolutionize comics in the late 1980s and 1990s. The original 75-issue release, all written by Gaiman, brought horror and fantasy back into the mainstream. Even as he dabbles in parts of DC’s mainstream universe, including storylines involving Golden Age superhero Sandman and D-list character Element Girl, Gaiman bases everything on real human emotion. With help from some of comics’ greatest illustrators, including Sam Keith, Colleen Doran, and Bryan Talbot.

Netflix series will cover portions of the first sixteen Sandman arcs, collected in Prelude and Nocturne and Dollhouse . But the story unfolds in surprising and often frightening ways. Collecting the main story in several volumes, The Sandman is best read as a series rather than individual issues.
