Neon has acquired the US copyright of Park Chan-wook Action Classic Oldboy , and is scheduled to release in time for the film’s 20 anniversary.
The film starring Choi Min-sik, Yoo Ji-tae and Kang Hye-jung won the grand prize at the
Cannes Film Festival. The film’s lines read: “After being kidnapped and imprisoned for fifteen years, Oh Dae-soo (Choi Min-sik) is released, only to find that he must find his captor within five days.”
Chan-wook wrote the script together with Hwang Jo-woon and Lim Jun-hyung. Old Boy is the second in Park’s Revenge trilogy, sandwiched between Sympathy for Mr. Revenge between) and Nemesis . It has also been adapted into an American remake from filmmaker Spike Lee and starring Josh Brolin.
The anniversary re-release has taken the box office. This summer, ET re-released on its 40 anniversary, and Steven Spielberg Grid’s sibling title Jaws will be released in September via Universal and Amblin, with IMAX and RealD 3D upgrades.
