Netflix revealed on Monday that it has ordered an adaptation of the popular Korean webtoon Doona!
The show will tell the coming-of-age romance of an ordinary college freshman and a former K-pop idol who meet in a shared house. The college student will be played by Yang Sejong ( Temperature of Love , Still and Dr. Romantic), while the show’s former idol named Doona will live in real life K-pop star Suzy( aka Bae Su-ji, Start-Up, Anna and Uncontrollably liking ).
Doona! will be directed by veteran K-drama director Lee Jung Hyo, the genius behind Netflix’s smash hit series Crash Landing on Love and Romance is a bonus book.
Netflix released some year-end viewership figures for its Korean content along with Monday’s series announcements. Although somewhat ambiguous, the numbers underscore how streamers are bullish on South Korean content. According to the company, more than 17% of global Netflix members watch Korean content at 90 and more than 10 weekly top lists for countries. Three of Netflix’s top ten non-English shows of all time are from South Korea (Squid Game, All of Us Are Dead , Extraordinary Attorney Woo), and Squid Game continue to be the most- of all Always watch Netflix titles in a content category (English or non-English).
Netflix’s wrap-up of Doona! wrote: “Suzy plays Doona, a former idol group’s lead singer and key member of the group’s popularity, who suddenly announces her retirement and locks herself in a sharehouse in a college town. … Yang Sejong Plays Du Na’s lover Joon, an ordinary, penniless college student who protects Du Na from the harsh reality with warmth and integrity.”
The anchor added Director Lee “Promises an offbeat, exciting romance for the sweet young twentysomething.”
Duana! Adapted by Chang Yu-he from Min Song-a’s original Naver webtoon Lee Doona! The series is produced by Studio Dragon, Showrunners and Studio N. A target release date was not disclosed. 2022 90
