'Normal People' Producer Element Pictures to Adapt Nicola Dinan's LGBT Romance 'Bellies' for TV

Element Pictures, the Emmy-nominated and BAFTA-winning adaptation of Sally RooneyNormal People, The Irish Flag , has landed another hit bildungsroman from a fast-rising young author.

Production company – Fremantle has acquired a majority stake following what has been described as a competitive auction Earlier this year — Film and TV rights to Nicola Dinan’s debut novel Bellies were acquired, which will be released in the US and UK next summer publishing. Element also produced adaptations of Rooney’s Conversations with Friends and Nancy Harris’ The Dry Edition, is an eight-episode series adaptation of the novel in collaboration with Dinan.

Moving from London to Kuala Lumpur and New York to Cologne, Bellies follows two queer students, Tom and Ming, who fell in love in college, found their relationship take a dramatic turn when Ming came out publicly and decided to do so.

“We were immediately captivated and moved by the love story between Tom and Ming and by Nicola’s writing, which is hilarious and heartbreaking at the same time,” said Element Pictures. Ed Guiney, Andrew Lowe and Chelsea Morgan Hoffmann, who will executive produce alongside Dinan. “We think the world craves a love story like theirs—truly given the space and complexity of their changing dynamics, both in Ming’s transition and as the two of them grow into adults—while still respecting The excitement and intensity of their first love. We’re excited to bring their story to the screen and excited that Nicola is adapting herself.”

Doubleday coming soon Bellies in the UK in July 2023, followed by Hanover Square Press in the US in August

“People told me that Bellies gave them a new perspective,” said Dinan, who now lives in London and is writing her first Two novels. “I think it’s really special in reminding me that fiction can be inspiring in a way that hard facts often can’t. In essence, Bellies have a lot to do with identity Nothing to do. Instead, it’s about two young men struggling to find their place in the world while learning how to take care of each other and those around them. I’m excited to be working with Element and to have the opportunity to continue exploring these characters and working with them on screen. The world shares.”

In addition to success on the small screen, Element has produced a string of critically acclaimed and award-winning films, including Room, The Favorite and The Lobster, in addition to the most recently released The Wonder , starring Florence Pugh, The Eternal Daughter , starring Tilda Swinton.

Fremantle will be in charge of Bellies with De Maio Entertainment worldwide sales.

The film and television rights deal was brokered by Lesley Thorne of Aitken Alexander Associates Ltd on behalf of Dinan and her literary agent Monica MacSwan and Mark Byrne of Element Pictures.
