Ohio State hosts in-state rival Toledo in the Horseshoe nonconference final in Saturday’s College Football Week 3 game.
The third-place Buckeyes had a perfect 2-game run, including a win over Notre Dame, who was No. 5 at the time, although the game didn’t look like it had Ireland down 2-0. Not as good as expected.
But still plenty of time to build a college football playoff resume and show off in a game like this is a great place to start.
Here’s what you need to know about Saturday’s matchup in “Shoes”.

What you need to know
Toledo:
MAC’s presumptive favorite this season – FPI predicts it can win 10 games this year – has gone 92-10 so far. Granted, it’s against a strong team, but that’s how you’re supposed to play that kind of game. DeQuan Finn is a 61% passer with an under-8 yd, but his run is solid: He leads Tolle in rushing yards with 138 and 3 of the team’s 8 rushing TDs many. Finn will piss off OSU’s top seven in the early stages, but the lack of skill goals means he won’t get much out of it.
Ohio State University: College football’s defending No. 1 offense didn’t look as dominant as we expected. Jaxon Smith-Njigba’s absence didn’t do much damage after CJ Stroud hit Marvin Harrison, Jr. for 3 touchdowns last week. Harrison and Emeka Egbuka both have over 200 yards, while TreVeyon Henderson and Miyan Williams have 7.1 and 5.9 ypc, respectively, and should eat with the Toledo defense, which isn’t great for the run.
+ Ohio State goes 32-0 on Ryan Day with over 30 points
+ Tole 2nd most in the nation with 5.0 points per game
+ Oregon State has not allowed a TD for 6 consecutive quarters, longest since 1/8 in 2019
+ UT ranks second with 58 yards passing per game
+ Ryan Day offense with 40+ points is 38-0
+ Toledo is 4th in total defense so far with 183 yards allowed per game
+ OSU holds opposing guards to 2.02 yards per carry, 9th nationally
+ Toledo’s all-time 0-3 vs. Ohio State
+ Ohio State was forced to punt 15 of the opponent’s 23 possessions (65 %)
+ Toledo’s all-time top 25 teams with a record of 9-19
+ Ohio State scored with a 100% red zone offense 1st National
+ Toledo 1st at MAC with 46 ppg and 230 yards rushing
+ OSU 20-1 and 10 at home -3 against non-conference opponents on Day
Tole The multi-quarterback made a lot of good gains with his legs early in the game, and he had two targets (Jamal Turner and Jejuan Newton) for more than 20 yards per catch.
And the Rockets are doing pretty well in the red zone: Their 6-in-20 rank is second in the nation behind Georgia and Clemson.
Don’t forget Toledo also played a good Notre Dame team last season close on the road, losing by just 3 points and could catch up if they look ahead to next weekend’s Wisconsin game The Buckeyes’ nap.
Jaxon Smith-Njigba’s return to the fold should prove enough inspiration to prevent that, as Stroud will have his full range of receivers and OSU has 2 A defender can easily push Toledo’s top seven sets.
