BALTIMORE — The reaction wasn’t superficially emotional like it’s often seen in prospect-calling videos.
Norfolk Triple-A head coach Buck Britton brought Jordan Westborg to his side late Sunday afternoon After entering the office, I didn’t waste too much time getting down to business. Westburg, the Orioles’ No. 3 pick and the No. 34 pick in the MLB pipeline, needs to pack his bags because he’s heading to The Show.
Westerberg gave a brief smile but thanked Britton in a professional manner and eventually hugged Britten, the smile quickly faded away.
“It hit me hard, I guess I’m trying to keep my composure,” Westerberg said Monday in a stand on Cam speaking to a group of local media in front of the new lockers inside the O’s Clubhouse at the Den. “Looks worse than it feels, that’s for sure.”
Gunnar Henderson himself is a former top The rookie, he called Westburg “smooth.” It was that character trait, along with his incredible list of baseball tools, that allowed Baltimore to know it was time to bring the next talented youngster to the big leagues, and they promoted him on Monday.
The Orioles immediately added Westburg to their lineup for the series opener against the Reds, with the 24-year-old from Started at second base and struck out seven.
“I feel good right now,” Westerberg said before the game. “I don’t really know what my emotions are. Excited. But yeah, it’s been a whirlwind day. I’m just happy to be here and ready to go.”
Westborg is likely to move forward infield, with head coach Brandon Hyde expecting Westborg to primarily play second and third, but also Possibly at shortstop. He also has the ability to hit the corner outfield, which he showed in Triple-A.
Hyde doesn’t intend to have a “one size fits all” lineup. That’s been true all season — which works out well considering Baltimore entered Monday with a 47-29 record — and that won’t change with the addition of Westburg.
“The bottom line is we’re going into the summer and the players need to rest,” Hyde said, “given the number of players on our roster. The amount of talent, I think it’s going to be fantastic to be able to move everyone around a little bit.”
Whenever Westerborg plays He should bring an offensive boost every time. Orioles can use it.
Second baseman Adam Frazier (.674 OPS in 74 games) and shortstop Jorge Mateo (.622 OPS in 68 games) both mpping has been phased out a bit late. Frazier hit .182 (12 for 66) in 18 games in June, while Mateo fell into a 1-for-18 decline before going 1-for-2 against Seattle on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Westborg had a solid year for Norfolk, hitting 15 doubles in 67 games , 2 triples, 18 homers and 54 RBIs for a .295/.372/.567 batting average. It’s his second time in that class, and he hit a .274/.361/.508 slash line with 25 doubles, three triples and 18 homers in 91 games with the 2022 Tide. Hitting and 74 RBIs.
The right-handed Westburg’s most impressive tool is his power. But the Mississippi State product has shown the ability to play average at a high level in the minors, posting a . 283 ERA in 158 career Triple-A games.
At the end of spring training, Orioles general manager Mike Elias said Westburg “was right there. ’ vying for a roster spot, noting he’s “very close” to the big leagues. Apparently Baltimore thought so too, as Westburg stayed in the big league camp until the final cut.
Now, it’s time for Westerborg to prove he’s ready. Was it difficult for him to wait?
“I’m really just focusing on each day and just trying to get better every day,” Westerberg said . “I’m sure it will come. Maybe not in my time, but in due time. I don’t think it’s too hard.”
Westerburg will be the first member of the Orioles’ 2020 draft class to debut in a major with Baltimore’s top two rookie catchers in the Class of 19, Adley Rucci Adley Rutschman appeared alongside Henderson.
“I’m really glad he’s here, I just wish he could get out there and be himself,” Henderson said. “I know it’s good enough at the major league level.”
There may be more promotions in the majors this year . Outfielders Colton Cowser (No. 15 overall in baseball) and Heston Schelstad (No. 40) are both currently in Triple-A, with the former closer to major league draft than the latter. So in the end, the Orioles’ roster should be filled with more young talent.
Westborough are behind Norfolk, who have already secured the Nations League playoffs with a first-half record seats. He’s now eager to help Baltimore reach the playoffs for the first time since 2016.
“It made me want to accept my role and help this team keep winning,” Westerberg said. “Right now, I’m not too concerned about anything personal. Right now, I’m focused on dealing with everyone in the clubhouse and helping this team continue to play great baseball.”
