Microsoft’s Internet Explorer was the most widely used browser in the world in the late 1990s and mid 2000s device. This is largely unnecessary since it is the default browser on most Windows computers. By the early 2000s, there were other players in the browser space, including some popular ones such as Mozilla Firefox and Opera Browser. In the early 2000s, Apple also released its own web browser, Safari. Fast forward to 2022, and the average internet user has plenty of options. First released in 2008, Google Chrome quickly replaced Internet Explorer as most people’s Preferred browser. Fourteen years later, the browser is still as popular as ever. Of the 631 people we surveyed, more than 56% said they regularly use Google Chrome as their primary browser. Like most competitors, Google Chrome is available on multiple platforms, including Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android. With over 27% voting for it (27.73% to be exact), Apple’s Safari browser managed to come in second. Considering that the Safari browser is exclusively available for devices running iOS, iPadOS and macOS, this is quite an achievement. There is no Android or Windows version of Apple’s Safari.
Ranked third with 7.45% of the vote, Mozilla Firefox managed to have its own fan base. Released in 2004, the browser has grown well over the past two decades and continues to provide users with a wealth of features. Like Google Chrome and most other browsers in this survey, Mozilla Firefox is a cross-platform browser available on the most popular operating systems. As Microsoft obsoletes Internet Explorer, the company’s replacement for the older browser — Microsoft Edge — has grown in popularity. The browser received 6.66% of the votes in our poll. Completing the vote were two other browsers, Opera and Vivaldi, with 1.43% and 0.48% of the vote, respectively.
