Acclaimed Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook has established his first project with Netflix. The director of Old Boy and last year’s stunning romantic noir Decision to Leave will co-write and produce period thriller War and Revolt, set in Korea during the Joseon Dynasty.
The film will be directed by Kim Sang Man, known for his critically acclaimed Action Thriller Midnight FM . Kim is also an accomplished art director, having worked on Park Geun-hye’s iconic action film Joint Security Area (2000) and I’m a cyborg, but it’s okay (2000).
War and Revolt has been described as taking viewers on a gripping journey set in the chaos of war. The lives of two childhood friends turned rivals.
A-list Korean actor Kang Dong Won ( manager , Peninsula ) as the enigmatic Cheon-young, a character whose extraordinary military prowess is at odds with his humble origins as a slave. Opposite gang Park Jung-min ( Save us from evil , Bleak Night ) as Jong-ryeo, Cheon- Young’s former owner and scion of North Korea’s most influential military family. After passing the military service exam, Zhong Li became Sun Jo’s personal bodyguard, and the reunion with her old friend is heartbreaking. Share your screen together. Describing both performances, Netflix said: “Struggling to break free from the shackles of servitude, Cheon-young will be brought to life by the extraordinary talent of the Gang, exuding charisma and delivering stunning action sequences that will leave viewers in awe… Looking forward to Park’s portrayal is simply mesmerizing as he delves into the complex psyche of a man torn between friendship and duty, ultimately facing his own downfall.”
Seung- won (Blood Rain, TV series Our Blues) will play King Sunjo, a man who invaded Japan. The monarch who initially deserted his people only sought redemption after the war by restoring his kingship. Kim Shin-rock (Hellbound) stars as decisive Bumdong, a militiaman who fearlessly defies social norms and faces any obstacle in her path . Jin Seon-kyu ( Extreme Job) stars as Kim Ja-ryeong, a civilian militia leader from the traditional ruling class, in the chaos of the invasion. And Jung Sung-ill (The Glory) brings to life the fearsome Japanese warlord Genshin, a character who recognizes Cheon-young’s extraordinary swordsmanship.
