Patrick Mahomes, LeBron James among big winners at 2023 ESPY Awards

1993 ESPY looks a little different this year, going without a host for the first time Years of Hollywood Screenwriters Strike History. The sports festivities continued, though, with athletes competing in a variety of different competitions coming together at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles on Wednesday night.

Kansas City Chiefs Quarterback Patrick Mahomes were the main event winners of the night, winning Men’s Athlete of the Year and NFL Player of the Year, with the Chiefs also winning Team of the Year. Mikaela Shiffrin (Best Athlete in Women’s Sports), Angel Reese (Best Breakthrough Athlete), LeBron James (Best Breakthrough Athlete) Performance) and Lionel Messi (Best Championship Performance) were also among the top winners.

Speakers include Damar Hamlin, Dwayne Wade, Travis Kelce, Sue Sue Bird, Mike Tyson & Livvy Dunne, Lil Wayne & HER performed to V Foundation Anniversary and Jim Valvano’s iconic ESPYS speech in 1993. Peyton and Eli Manning also participated in a sketch comedy.

In addition to the competition honors, a special award was also awarded to the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team Ash Award for Courage; Chicago White Sox pitcher and cancer survivor Liam Hendricks honored with Jimmy V Perseverance Award; Hermann Service Award.

Additionally, this year’s show honored Sports Humanitarian Award recipients, including Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian Award winners (Jrue Holiday of the Milwaukee Bucks and Retired player Lauren Holiday). U.S. Women’s National Team), Billie Jean King Young Leaders Award (Jordan Adeyemi, Ashley Baddis and Rishan Patel), Stewart Scott ENSPIRE Award (Richard De Lapchick) and Sports Humanitarian Team of the Year (San Antonio Spurs).
