New England Patriots quarterback Mike Jones suffered a back injury in Sunday’s loss to the Miami Dolphins, according to Pro Mark Daniels of Wiedens Magazine . The Patriots selected the 24-year-old with the 15th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft following his prolific junior season. He finished with 4,500 yards, 41 touchdowns and four interceptions in his first year as Alabama’s starter. His 203.1 passing efficiency rating was the highest ever for FBS in a single season at the time. Many expect Jones to start at least 2021 as Cam Newton’s backup, who spent the offseason with Newton. England re-sign. However, the Patriots released Newton, paving the way for Jones to face the Dolphins in Week 1 nod in the game. His performance in the preseason didn’t just earn him the job. His composure in the regular season was further evidence of the Patriots vs Jones. He threw for 3,801 yards, 22 touchdowns and 13 interceptions, finishing second in Offensive Rookie of the Year voting. New England’s hopes of beating the Buffalo Bills in the AFC East will go a long way Depending on Jones’ performance in 2022, he’s 21-for-30 for 213 yards, a touchdown and a pick.
With that in mind, their starting injury would pose obvious problems for the Patriots. Brian Hoyer’s limitations are obvious after years in the NFL, and rookie Bailey Zappe has yet to prove at that level.
Neither are ideal under-center alternatives.
