  • Miami Gardens, FL — New England Patriots quarterback Mike Jones needed an X-ray after suffering a back injury in Sunday’s 20-7 loss to the Miami Dolphins.

The team canceled his scheduled news conference, although he will meet with the media on Monday, the Patriots said.

Jones finished 21 times – 30 yards for 213 yards, 1 touchdown, 1 interception. He was fired twice, hit hard in a blind spot blitz in the second quarter, fumbled for the ball, and the Dolphins returned it for a touchdown.

After the game, Jones walked down to the X-ray room under his own power, next to Patriots security guards.

He stayed in the room for about five minutes before walking back to the team’s locker room. Shortly thereafter, a Patriots media official announced that Jones would not hold a news conference to announce that he had a back injury.

Jones gets veteran Brian Hoyer and rookie Bailey Zappe for the entire game.

Coach Bill Belichick said he didn’t know if Jones was injured because he wasn’t in the practice room. When asked about Jones’ performance, he said: “Not a lot of incomplete passes.”

The Patriots visit the Pittsburgh Steelers on September 18.
