Of course, the star needs to don her own personality for this one. Williams wore a purple floral-print Chanel button-up shirt and knee-length shorts, with a matching bucket hat and mini quilted necklace bag. Shorts, he says, are his signature piece. “I love shorts, even though they’re the longest I’ve worn in a long time,” Williams said. “My shorts are usually shorter; I lean towards 1980 tennis players or something. But this is a very different look—flowy and super comfortable.” He added that the brand’s sleek, universal appeal keeps him coming back for more. “They made something that I could achieve,” Williams said. “Whether it’s the women’s cardigan or the black jacket, it’s inspired by the silhouette of the men’s bellman jacket, and a lot of what Coco Chanel did in the beginning was borrowed from something very masculine.”
Williams must visit some sights other than the show. “We go everywhere, from the market to the hood,” Williams said. “We went to a place called Medina; it was very beautiful.” The star also stopped at the Bufalo Soldier Music Shop, where he met owner Cheikh Amala Doucouré , and visited some markets in Dakar. “We saw everything from clothing to jewelry to modern and ancient statues,” Williams said. “I don’t buy much, though. I’m more interested in people watching.” What’s his main takeaway from all the locals? “You see the resilience of the people and you feel the tremendous pride in their sovereignty.”
