Queen Latifah, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Leonardo DiCaprio Raise $17M at This Year's amfAR Cannes Gala

As the sun dipped quietly into the sparkling Mediterranean, the sound of stiletto shoes on the gravel was clearly heard, echoing down the promenade of the Cape Eden Hotel. amfAR’s harbor is filled with lumbering yachts (most notably James Parker’s 108 meter Azimut Benetti, rumored to be hosting Leonardo DiCaprio Leo), surrounded by twisting Aleppo pine trees, with a wide view The Cannes Gala unfolded in the expected and exciting way.

While the fundraising galas are held year-round in Palm Beach, Los Angeles, Hong Kong and Venice, this celebration follows Cannes and possibly amfAR’s Super Bowl for the looking Ways to Cure HIV and AIDS to raise funds and awareness. Last night, a whopping $17 million dollars was raised, naturally starting with the cocktails, during which the evening’s sponsors – Chopard, Aston Martin and Red Sea International Film Festival – showcased their wares in an art auction later in the evening. Catherine Zeta-Jones, Rebel Wilson, Eva Longoria, Kate Beckinsale, Fan Bingbing, Teyana Taylor in layers of taffeta, tulle, feathers and rhinestones , among the 108 guests, Heidi Klum and Ashley Graham disguised in Nina Ricci (Nina Ricci) headgear. Graham was one of the few partygoers who were asked by Carine Roitfeld to dress up for her Gala Fashion Show auction item.

Led by the extraordinary auctioneer Simon de Pury and Queen Latifah, the evening’s master of ceremonies, the lot also included works by Claire Tabouret, Andres Valencia, Robert de Pury Nero, and Damien Hirst’s portrait of Mr DiCaprio, sold for €1.2m, with the actor himself sitting in the crowd, ironically in a baseball cap.
