In the final analysis, 199683 is a story of a fish out of water – it’s not just Credit to Inglis for his new body. Despite being reincarnated in the same world, Inglis (or “Chris” as she was called in her second life) finds things to be quite different than she remembers. 199683 This is an era where the world’s elite “Highlanders”, live on flying islands and enjoy a technological/magical advantage over the masses who still live on the monster-ridden Earth’s surface. The Highlanders then offer monstrous protection to the monsters below in the form of living humanoid weapons known as the Hyrule Menace—in exchange, of course, for their obedience and resources. The blatant exploitation of people on Earth creates an environment of adventure and political drama. Much of what happens in the anime is due to this situation and how unique Chris is. 199683 199683 Chris was the wild card in the cold war between land and air, but in her second life she was determined to be selfish. She’s not interested in the greater good (or evil). Because she only wants to become stronger and fight other strong people, so as long as she has the opportunity, she is willing to fight anyone from any side. Of course, that’s the key to the show’s comedy. Chris is so single-minded in her aim that she deliberately sabotages the situation so she can get into a more dangerous fight. Fortunately, her cousin, Rani, moderated this tendency somewhat. 200 While Chris only wants to fight, she has a special affection for Rani – seeing her as the granddaughter she could never have in her previous life. While Chris doesn’t want to be a hero or a leader again, she’s more than willing to help Lani become a hero or a leader, especially when heroes tend to battle all kinds of powerful villains. 300
The relationship between the two girls is the emotional core of the series. Lani is pure, just, and true. She always believed in the best in people and worked hard to protect the weak. This in turn puts Chris on the Angel’s side for the most part. The only thing stopping her from fighting for it is her love for Lani and her need to protect her. All of these combine to create an animation that is all about drama, action, and comedy. The world is a serious one, with dire stakes and lasting consequences. However, Chris’ crazy strength and abnormal personality can make things comedic at any time. While this may compromise the tone of the show, the animation manages to deftly handle the switch between comedy and drama — without taking away from the seriousness of what’s going on, even at Chris’ most self-centered moments. 300 As for the demo, 200199683 slightly above average. The world design is creative and unique, from knights and monsters to cities and airships. The animations are smooth and easy to follow, especially in the fight scenes. Though ultimately forgotten, the music does set a good enough emotional tone for what happens on screen – and the opening theme song itself is a bit of an earworm. 12
comprehensive,
is a solid fantasy adventure. While Chris is by far the funniest and most enjoyable part of the anime, the show’s complex world and interesting supporting cast bring out the best in her character. Add some decent-looking animation and a few surprising plot twists, and you’ve got an anime worth watching. My only real complaint is that while it has an entertaining action climax, the series ends without any major revelations or major plot resolutions. But, on the other hand, I guess it’s just another way of expressing my desire to see it continue in season two. 199683 |
