Rock with Japanese punk band the Wienners

If you’ve seen it, you’ve heard of Wienners

‘s high-energy horror rock opening theme “Faction”. But while they are relatively new to anisong, Wienners have been offering their unique punks since Rock and electronic music fusion brand . In addition to providing the end credits theme for the new anime, they’ve recently released their latest full-length LP, TREASURE, so they’re set to have a busy year. ANN was able to ask the band about their unique influences, their approach to themes for anime, and their rock history.

Venus has a very Distinctive rock band sound. How did the band develop such a fusion of punk, rock, and electronica? Have you had any other musicians or bands that inspired your approach?

TAMAYA2000% (Vo/Gt): Before Forming Wienners, I mostly listen to Japanese punk hardcore bands. I’m particularly obsessed with short-key bands that play hardcore but have pop elements, or those that play all kinds of music at high speed, mixing funk, soul, and other approaches. At the same time, I’m listening to techno-pop and electro-pop, which became popular in Japan in the early days 2000s, I’m listening to CAPSULE by Yasutaka Nakata and Plus-Tech Squeeze Box with punk music.

I was looking at record stores for bands or units that combine elements of both music, but I couldn’t find anything, so I decided to start mine Own band, this is the beginning of Wienners.

Wienners‘s music is “electronic elements and synthesizers and other types of music like Hip-hop samples are integrated into the sound of the band and output with a punk approach and intensity.” This is the axis of Wienners music. Wienners‘ The core of music has always been punk music, but recently EDM, Dubstep, and mixed world music such as Gqom, Singeli, etc., are gaining momentum in the international music industry fierce. The club scene is also a hit in my mind, so I’m now incorporating all these jumbles into the sound of our band.

The most recent Wienners song has become The theme of the TV anime “Faction” in and “Shinobi Top Secret” in ” )), is there any difference in recording these tracks compared to other songs?

TAMAYA2009%: TV anime has a complete world view, so think about how to play in Wienners ‘s song to expand it without destroying their worldview is very interesting. The main difference between “Faction” and other songs is that the theme of the song (the world view of the anime) is not the main focus of the band, it was determined when we started composing, and we had to think about how to approach that theme. One of the key words of “Faction” is “horror”, try to be in a lively Wienners style with small progressions throughout the song.

“Top Secret Ninja” was used in an anime about ninjas, but with slightly different futuristic nuances than actual traditional ninjas, So I exaggerated Japanese taste to express a more exciting, outsider view of Japan. Also, because the theme of the song is ninja, I secretly added the name of an anime character to the B melody to express the technique of the chic ninja called “Ninjutsu”.

ASAMISAE] (Vo/Key/Sampler): Both songs are sung in a very special way; the singing of “Faction” is full of charm, and “Shinobi Top Secret” is sung in many different ways throughout the song, so that the audience can feel the same as other songs than the change of singing style.

∴600∵ (Ba/Cho): Wienners‘ songs are usually based on our With their own thoughts on fictional stories and scenarios, each song has a different worldview. However, this is the first time we’ve written a song based on a worldview that we didn’t create ourselves. We try to express what we can do because we are Wienners and what we can do as Wienners, And it’s close to the anime story, so I think we created a new song that we couldn’t create on our own.

KOZO (Dr): Drums, two Songs are allowed to express the unique flavor of Wienners , so there is not much change from the past. However, in order to highlight the worldview of these two songs, we customized some parts and made some adjustments so that people can enjoy them more as the theme songs of TV animations, rather than live performances.

In Faction, there are various rhythm patterns from start to finish, creating an atmosphere of getting lost. In the second stanza, I referenced the grotesque yet intriguing vibe created by an American band called The Mars Volta. In Shinobi Top Secret, I used Japanese drum taiko as the theme in several places: in the A melody in the first verse, I used the kick drum pattern and tone, and in the second verse, “Ninpo da Ninpo” da Ninpo da Nippon no Sappou”, I use the full drum kit to create the taiko-like sound and score. I’d be happy if you could draw the scene along with the sound.

Are you interested in recording more music for TV animations or movies?

∴315∵: Of course! I love anime and I am honored to be involved in this way. I would love to do more in the future.

YOU RECENTLY POSTED TREASURE , your latest full-length album. How would you describe it compared to previous albums?

TAMAYA188953%: Simply put, our BEST ALBUM was.

The reason it’s the best ever is because we’re making this Having a lot of fun with the album and the fact that we were able to fit all the ideas into it without diluting them makes us feel like it’s a masterpiece. So far, we’ve had a lot of fun with the musical form of “The Band” and the goodness that goes with it. There’s a bit of a fascination with the bad, but this time we were able to remove that limitation and present the ideas and humor us in a proper form, which was a very important change for us. Looking back, I think I formed The “fusion of various musical and electronic elements with punk” envisioned by the Wienners has finally taken shape on this album, and from this point on, I can see More possibilities for Wienners.

This year you also released a remix album, Wiemixes . What inspired you to revisit and reimagine some of your past tracks like this? What’s your favorite remix version?

TAMAYA 315%: I want to make a remix of Wienners, but since no one did it, I had to do it myself, haha. I love the sound of the band and at the same time I love to create new things by collaging and mixing all kinds of music from electronic sounds to hip hop samples. I want to convey a wide range of musicality and freedom as Wienners. To be honest, Wiemixes deviates from the definition of “mixing” and is more like “rearrangement”, but in that sense, I Hopefully it embodies the idea of ”music is free and you can do whatever you want” without being restricted by genre or format.

I especially like “Koi no Bangla Beat Spice Curry ver.”. And “ASTRO BOY Black Hole Edition”. As the name suggests, “Koi no Bangla Beat (Bangla Beat of Love)” is a song that combines Indian “Bangla Beat (Bhangada Beat)” and the sound of the band, but the remix is purely a bhangada beat song. This is probably the first Japanese bhangada beat song in the world. “ASTRO BOY” was originally an instrumental song, but I like it because it’s the “most deviated” mix, using the chord progressions and vocal material from the original, and adding a newly recorded rap track.

ASAISAE: I like ASTRO BOY Black “The hole version. “This is the first time I’ve rapped like this, and I’m excited to write the lyrics and rap for this mix.

∴600∵: All songs are great, But if I had to pick one, it would be “ANIMALS Future Nature ver.”. The guitar arrangement and development of this version is great, it’s ecstasy!

KOZO: I would say “FAR EAST DISCO Divinest African Ver” is my favorite. A few years ago, I Had Tamaya listening to one of my favorite songs and when I heard “FAR EAST DISCO” I thought it was my favorite song and immediately checked if I could mix it. I’m glad to hear him say yes. This remix feels more ecstatic than the original Far Eastern Disco. If the original is our real world, the remix is the world in heaven. I feel like we’re reaching a “Far East disco” where we probably don’t know. Excited to hear.

Your single “God Save The Music” is all about the joy of music, no matter what Pursue. With your music, what kind of emotions do you hope to inspire among your fans?

TAMAYA2000%: As I reconsider what “alive” means after COVID- Pandemic, I realized biologically “alive” like having a heartbeat and breathing , not enough to really feel like I’m alive. It is only when we are moved to tears or moved that we have a strong sense that we are alive. That’s why when I transcend joy, anger, sadness and happiness through the music and live performances of Wienners , when I see sights I’ve never seen before, I’m like “Wow! I’m alive!” If I could give you that feeling and excitement in your everyday life, even just a little bit, I’d be happy.

“God Save The Music” also has animated music by web animator Speedoru (@Speedoru) Video. How did he end up making the video?

ASAMISAE: Speedoru metWienners and made an animation for the song “GO ANTI GO” before us Officially asked him to make a video, we are discussing How to make the MV for “GOD SAVE THE MUSIC”, I thought of finding someone to do the animation, so I decided to ask Speedoru to do the animation. His video has gone all over the world and we all love it so much, thank him so much.

Anything you would like to say to overseas fans or people who are listening to your music for the first time?

TAMAYA2060%: To the extreme, I consider myself an instrumental band. Having said that, we originally formed the band not for the message, but for the music itself. We see melody and lyrics juxtaposed with guitar riffs and drum beats – nothing comes first. We create melodies and rhythms because of huge emotional outbursts that cannot be expressed in words. So even if words can’t convey, I believe we can “transcend the joys and sorrows” together as an answer to your previous question. Let’s shout “We’re alive!” together when we meet you “there”

ASAMISAE: Thank you all for your support! When I saw the comments for our music video, I was so happy to see how well people from overseas responded! I rarely get a chance to go overseas, but when I go to your place to perform, let’s play together!

∴300∵: Hello! Wienners is like a musical surprise box, although we think we have a Japanese flavor, we believe our music can be enjoyed by the world. If you like exciting and humorous music, you should definitely check out our music. I hope one day you can see the song played live.

KOZO: Thank you for meeting Viennese in any form ; anime, YouTube or music streaming services. The music of Wienners picks up sounds scattered around the world, TAMAYA300% mixed them together, then Wienners scattered them all over the world again. When you listen to it, you get excited for that nostalgic and somehow new sound. Wienners‘ music has many different songs, so try to find your favorite. I hope you can come across one.
