Rodón K’s nine to help Yankees complete sweep of Fenway twin bill

BOSTON — Carlos Rodón’s first season in a Yankees uniform has hardly gone as expected, but the left-hander can take solace in this: he defeated the Red Sox in his first attempt.

Rodón recovered after a leadoff homer to strike out nine as the Yankees completed a doubleheader sweep, posting a 4-1 victory on Tuesday evening at Fenway Park.

New York won the first game of the split-admission twin bill, 3-2, behind Gleyber Torres’ go-ahead, two-run single. With the sweep, the Yankees (73-72) tied the Red Sox for fourth place in the American League East.

After Ceddanne Rafaela slugged Rodón’s first pitch over the Green Monster, the lefty found his groove, permitting just four hits and the one run in a five-inning effort. Rodón hadn’t faced Boston since 2018, when he was with the White Sox.

Estevan Florial put New York on the board in the fifth with a run-scoring single. Jake Bauers drove in the go-ahead run on a sixth-inning fielder’s choice.

Zach McAllister pitched a scoreless sixth inning, his first big league appearance since 2018. The Yankees originally selected McAllister in the third round of the 2006 MLB Draft; he was promoted earlier on Tuesday when the Yanks placed reliever Jonathan Loáisiga on the injured list with right elbow inflammation.
