This Shaka series is considered a beloved in many RPG circles classic series. Their mechanics are directly inspired by, and inspired by, other popular RPG series. Romantic SaGa -Minstrel Song- Remastered Yes2005 The game of the same name, but also the
remake of the original game. With such an ancient work given new life in this era, is there anything modern players can enjoy in this blast from the past?
as someone who has never played
Shaka games, I cannot offer the perspective of a veteran who has the mechanics of these games firmly ingrained in muscle memory. Instead, I can only offer someone’s first foray into the series’ perspective and comment on whether someone in a similar situation to me will be able to enjoy the game. I know that this remake offers a lot of quality of life improvements over the original remake, resulting in a smoother and faster experience. There are various progression options. The interface is very easy to grasp, and the pace of the game feels relatively fast compared to other role-playing games coming out today. I take all of these positives into account, especially when the biggest hurdle revolves around how much to go through.

This is one of the greatest RPGs I’ve ever played. The main story can be viewed from the perspective of multiple characters selected when opening a new save file. Each character begins their journey in a different place, with some offering unique environments and abilities based on their background. Over time, however, everything seems to converge. Speaking of time, this is a key factor to consider, as many events and quests in the game are very time sensitive. At startup, you can choose between the American or Japanese event system. While I haven’t played the game enough to fully see all of these differences, event triggers can vary depending on how you set up the game to begin with. In fact, it’s an option that feels unique and potentially offers a lot of replay value.
The biggest compliment I can give this game is the enormous freedom to explore or miss things, depending on how you choose to play. Although there are multiple starting points depending on the character you choose, one common denominator is that you are more or less encouraged to explore and do as many events or side quests as possible. The world will then change based on your choices, with quests becoming available depending on triggers you encounter, enemies in surrounding areas becoming stronger, secondary characters changing, etc. If anything, though technically you have a dedicated story path to follow, there’s more emphasis on developing yourself as a player and letting the game challenge you than following a relatively linear storyline.
20220531 © 22 SQUARE ENIX COMPANY Limited 2022 This could be beneficial given the game’s rich combat mechanics. Various skills and proficiencies can be acquired that help you in combat and exploring dungeons. Some of these abilities can be earned in town, but others can be discovered through combat, and your stats will naturally level up over time. However, unlike many other RPGs, characters only level up specific stats based on the enemies they face and how they’re defeated, rather than all stats leveling up after gaining enough experience. Each character has different stats that allow for a new approach to fighting. This approach means you can shape your character’s abilities however you want according to your strategy. This emphasis on player choice can be very satisfying…provided you know what you’re doing.
Although you are bombarded with text and explanations of what you can do, there are very few in-game tutorials to walk you through how everything works. You’re not sure which equipment will help you right away, and it’s unclear how your stats level up. While combat is simple, the game doesn’t introduce random concepts and abilities into combat with little warning. Once I got the hang of it, I’d say I found more fun improving the party than figuring out what happened next in the story. However, it’s a steep learning curve, and arguably it might be hard to recommend the game to new modern gamers looking for something that won’t test their patience too much, or those hoping the game’s story will carry them along. people.
This lack of emphasis on narrative triggers makes it difficult for new players like me to understand what the game’s story has to offer. We encourage you to talk to almost every NPC you come across, but the game doesn’t necessarily do a good job of discerning which quests further the overall narrative. The game seems more interested in bombarding you with text about what you can do than leading you to do what you’re supposed to do. That’s not necessarily a problem, it’s arguably the appeal of most open-world games, but it can slow down the pace.
20220531© 300 SQUARE ENIX Limited 2022 None of this is helped by the overall presentation of the game, which I think has some elements that are not the most elegant aging. While the game has a lot of voice acting, most of it is average. While some of the background art and monster designs can be quite eye-catching, the actual character models don’t look very appealing. Some in-between approach to simple proportioned bodies with detailed textures can make everything look very busy and sometimes downright ugly. Thankfully, the soundtrack is fantastic, with a variety of melodies and themes that almost wrap you up like a warm hug. The game’s opening theme alone was enough to keep me from jumping to the title screen right away, and the battle music was very catchy and energetic.
Overall, I can’t say my first experience Shaka The franchise is bad anyway. I now know that some of the quirky and unorthodox elements that define the series through the leveling system can be very rewarding. The multiple story paths and event system lead to different moments of replayability, which makes me glad I got this gamer Switch, because it means I can pick things up at my own pace anywhere. However, that doesn’t change the fact that many opening times can be pretty tough, as the game doesn’t always make things clear to the player in an understandable way. It’s the kind of game series where what you get out of it is proportional to how much you’re willing to put in. If you are already
Shaka series (maybe even a fan of the original game), or if you’re looking for a slightly less traditional RPG on the market today, then I think this game is worth checking out. But if you’re looking for something more straightforward, you might want to look elsewhere.
