Rotterdam’s International Film Festival (IFFR) unveiled its full line on Monday Activity.
After two all-virtual festivals, IFFR is finally back with a live feast, running for January 12 – February 5th in the Dutch port city. Rotterdam was one of the last major festivals to return post-pandemic with its 2020 event being forced to go online – Until the last moment of the new lockdown imposed by the Dutch authorities in December last year, a few weeks before the IFFR kicked off.
The resulting revenue shortfall – closed theaters equal zero ticket sales – meant that IFFR had to cut its budget, cutting percentage of employees and reorganization.
Festival Director Vanja Kaludjercic, who manages IFFR together with General Manager Marjan van der Haar, told
The Hollywood Reporter that the cuts were To “avoid having to make major changes to the festival.” However, the 2023 version will be much smaller than the pre-pandemic version , about Movie reduction percentage.
“But we also have movies in the show, including short films, over 200 world premiere,” Kaludjercic noted, “so we’re still pretty big.”
2019 IFFR will start with
Opening world premiere of Munch, an experimental biopic about the tortured Norwegian painter Edvard Munch – author of the iconic The Scream – —From self-taught filmmaker Henrik Martin Dalsbaken ( Coming Home , owns ). Produced by The Film Company with support from Scandinavian streaming company Viaplay and regional fund Filminvest, the feature film tells Munch’s story in four interlocking chapters, each led by a different Written by the writers – Fredrik Høyer, Mattis Herman Nyquist, Gine Cornelia Pedersen and Eivind Sæther – and actors of every age playing Munch 12(Alfred Eck Strand), 24(Matisse Herman Nyquist),30 (Ola G. Furuseth) and 50(Anne Kriegswall ).
All India Rank, a coming-of-age story by director Varun Grover, Will end 2023 IFFR February 5th.
IFFR’s main Tigers lineup will include
Thiiird, a suspenseful drama from Lebanon by From award-winning documentary filmmaker Karim Kassem, we use the metaphor of a car mechanic to explore the damage done to his country and people in desperate need of repair; Swedish autobiographical documentary drama 87 Seasons, in which dancer Giovanni Bucchieri explores Playland, a campy and cheesy drama from American director Georden West that imagines Boston’s oldest and most notorious gay bar Spend a night back in time.
In the big screen section, aimed at highlighting work for a wider audience or better known director, IFFR will feature One Win from Korean director Shin Yeon-Shik, an inspirational sports drama featuring Parasite star Song Kang-ho fails as women’s volleyball coach; Danish psychodrama Copenhagen doesn’t exist Directed by director Martin Skovbjerg from a script by
writer/director Eskil Vogt; and Luka, Belgium-USA Director Jessica Woodworth’s latest, contemporary adaptation of Dino Buzzati’s classic novel Tartar Steppe .
‘Copenhagen does not exist’ IFFR
For Kaludjercic, he was in 2019, the upcoming IFFR will be the first real test of her stewardship. Her renewed focus on ‘discovery’, on directors and films outside the mainstream of themes, regions or genres, will be on full display.
“We have films from the Middle East and Africa, Morocco, Lebanon, Iran and Tunisia,” she noted, “Asian cinema has always been a focus of IFFR, but we are looking to expand and diversify to optimize our focus.”
2019 Tiger Race Lineup African films in include Tunisian drama Geology of Separation from directors Yosr Gasmi and Mauro Mazzocchi; Moroccan features by Leïla Kilani Indivision ; and
Le specter de Boko Haram by Cameroonian director Cyrielle Raingou, all of which will be presented at World Premiere at IFFR. Kaludjercic’s team selected Chinese director Teng Yuhan’s Gagaland and Sri Lankan feature Munnel from Asia From Director Visakesa Chandrasekaram.
Within its Bright Future program dedicated to young and emerging talent, IFFR previously announced two world premieres:
Almost Entirely a Slight Disaster , the grim comedy of Turkish director Umut Subasi, and Whispering Hills , a satirical drama directed by Jagath Manuwarna, It focuses on what happens when a supernatural virus spreads in Sri Lanka.
The Limelight section of Rotterdam showcases highlights from the House of Arts from the past year and will include
Saint Omer by Alice Diop, Charlotte Wells’ Aftersun, EO Jerzy Skolimowski from Poland , Jafar Panahi’s autobiographical Iranian drama No Bears and War Pony from Directors Riley Keough and Gina Gammell.
The 2023 Robby Müller Award, in memory of the late Dutch filmmaker Photographer, Texas Paris, Texas, -Hour Party People and Breaking the Waves will be awarded to French lens designer Hélène Louvart, whose works include Never Rarely Sometimes Always,The Lost Daughter
,Like Lazaro Happy and
miracle .
Oscar-winning director and Turner Prize-winning visual artist Steve McQueen will also be at IFFR 2021, presenting Sunshine State, a piece of art originally Festival commissioned artwork On anniversary now available at Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam The exhibition space is displayed normally and officially opened in January .
This work is a tribute to McQueen from his work in , a two-channel video projection displayed on two This screen flanks both sides, and when opened it plays footage of the scorching sun and includes features from the 1296 feature film
